The Department of French and Italian at Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH, USA) invites applications for a faculty position in history (formateur occasionnel) to teach a seminar in its study abroad program located in Montparnasse. Teaching would cover two program sessions, in the winter and spring quarters of 2026; approximately eighteen university students participate in each session. The history seminar would meet three hours per week in total, typically divided into two class meetings. It is expected that about half of the contact hours will include visits across Paris (museums, monuments, performing arts), making experiential visits in the city a core component of the class. This is a 6 month position with the possibility of renewal.
Skills :
Native fluency in French, strong knowledge of English
Qualifications :
Doctorate in history with degree received by the start date, proven record of university-level teaching

Students in Dartmouth’s program seek immersive study in French and come to Paris from a wide variety of disciplines on our US campus. They live with French host families and take a total of three courses during their stay: history, language, and literature. A Dartmouth faculty director accompanies the program and teaches the literature course. Conditions :
Since programs usually feature one or two overnight excursions, curricular tie-ins and the availability to accompany the group are especially welcome. Additional duties include presence at welcome and farewell receptions, and availability to students during office hours.

Along with their cv, a letter of interest addressing teaching philosophy, and the names of two potential recommenders, applicants are asked to provide a ten-week syllabus for a French history course of their own design, taught in French, that will make use of the city and develop its themes across a broad chronology. Sample course titles could include: “Civil Rights and Civil Strife in the City,” “Paris and Its Environment,” “The Politics of Paris,” “Paris: Crossroads of Identity,” “Paris Chronicles,” “Historicizing Culture in and through Paris,” and “Transatlantic Paris.”
