Adjunct Professor in the Department of Economics & Finance

The St. John’s Paris Association invites applications for qualified professors to teach Economics of Poverty & Income Inequality in the Department of Economics and Finance for the Office of International Education at St. John’s University. This position normally involves the delivery of two consecutive five-week sessions per semester under a contrat à durée déterminée with the possibility of an indefinite contract in future.

Course Description:

 

ECO 1320 This course provides an overview of the economic issues of poverty and income inequality as they exist in developed countries. The course will examine the economic, social and political causes of poverty and income inequality, how they are measured, and the role of public policy. The course also examines the cost to individuals and society of persistently high levels of poverty and rising levels of income inequality. (Credit: 3 semester hours)

 

Course Objectives:

 

·         To give students an understanding of the recent trends in poverty and income inequality

·         To expose students to the various theories offered by economists to explain poverty and inequality

·         To examine the role of economic theories in the development of public policy

·         To examine the effectiveness of public policy in alleviating poverty

·         To demonstrate the interconnections between economic, social, and political factors

·         To develop research skills, formulate hypothesis, collect and analyze data, and present conclusions

Logistics:

 We are offering this course for the Western Europe study abroad program in Fall 2024.

The dates for the first session are October 7 – November 13, 2024. The dates for the second session are November 18 – December 19, 2024. Each session will meet 8 hours per week for five weeks totaling 40 contact hours per session, 80 contact hours in all. Classes typically run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 16:00-18:40.

ECO 1320 is an Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) course, requiring students to participate in local community service projects and reflect on their experience within the context of the course.
