Interim Resident Director, Boston College France


The Office of International Programs (OIP) at Boston College is seeking applications for a maternity leave replacement of a Resident Director for the Boston College France fall 2019 study abroad program in Paris. Boston College currently has agreements with the Université Paris-Sorbonne, Université Paris-Dauphine, École supérieure de commerce de Paris (ESCP), Science-Po Paris, and Institut Catholique de Paris, through which it sends a total of 20-25 undergraduate Boston College students each fall and spring.

Boston College offers mandatory home stay housing for all students. Housing is arranged by a professional housing agency, and the Resident Director is expected to work very closely with the agency to ensure positive student experiences in Paris.

The Resident Director provides orientations for students at the start of each semester, which are scheduled in coordination with the start date of each university. S/he serves as a liaison with the university partners and works with the host university officials to facilitate all registration procedures for students. During the registration period, the Resident Director assists students with obtaining an appropriate course of study, including advice concerning recommended professors and courses across a range of disciplines. S/he reviews all courses to insure proper registration and assures the proper issuing and transmittal of transcripts.

The Resident Director meets with students on a weekly basis during the semester to provide academic and personal counseling. S/he serves as a 24-hour emergency contact.

The Resident Director teaches a one-credit two weeks French course at the beginning of the semester for advanced level students aimed at teaching the French University Methodology and bringing the students to more confidence with their oral French.

In addition, s/he plans frequent cultural activities and organizes one weekend excursion during each semester that explores another French region. S/he administers an activities budget and sends financial reports regularly to the Associate Director for Finance and Operations. S/he also sends a semester report at the end of each semester with photos of the activities and syllabus. In coordination with the Associate Director for Finance and Operations, s/he manages classroom reservation, bill payments on behalf of Boston College France Association, and conducts search for the intern. S/he will start preparing the following semester students’ arrival. S/he will book the upcoming summer programs dorms and classrooms.

The Resident Director reports to OIP’s Director. Additionally, s/he works closely with the Associate Director for Finance & Operations, as well the Program Manager for France.

Applicants must have at least a Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, the ability to teach college-level French courses, and at least three to five years of experience with study abroad programs in a university setting. S/he will have demonstrated experience in dealing with U.S. student life issues, academic concerns, and critical incidents. S/he should be familiar with the U.S. higher education system and the general profile of current university students and their parents. As a mediator between French and U.S. cultures, s/he must have excellent bilingual skills and cross-cultural competency. In addition, the Resident Director needs to be familiar with Paris.  Authorization to work in France is required.
